Robert M. (Bob) Scott, who gave me my start as a Professor of Music Theory and Composition in 1986, was Director of Bands, Music Department Head, and later, Dean of Arts and Letters at what is now Missouri State University. I composed and arranged many pieces of music at his request, including two important works for Concert Band. The first of these, Proclamation, was commissioned by Bob in 1986 and later performed at MMEA. It became my first published work for band (TRN Publications).

The second piece, Leaves That Descend To No Drum, was written in 1993 to honor Bob on the occasion of his retirement. Some time later, he was judging a Concert Band Festival, and heard a band play it as one of their contest pieces. He was thrilled, and called to tell me about it soon after.

Both of these pieces can be downloaded as audio files here.

This recording of Proclamation was made in 2025 by the Missouri State University Wind Symphony under the direction of Matthew Boswell.

This recording of Leaves That Descend To No Drum was made in 2021 by the Missouri State University Wind Ensemble under the direction of John Zastoupil. This work is published by Claude T. Smith Publications.
